I refer to this style of enamelled work as 'Biscuit' because when it comes hot out of the kiln, it is often curled up, so whilst hot I flatten it with a spatula. This reminds me of baking ginger biscuits, which get flattened before and during the baking process...
The Vitreous Enamel is fired onto textured and perforated copper sheet. Once it has had several firings, and the top surface has been ground with diagrit, and had its final firing, the piece remains delicate, and very light weight. So to make it stronger, I set it as I would a semi-precious stone, so it sits on a purpose made shelf that mimics the irregularities of the enamelled surface.
I use sterling silver to make the setting and the rivets, and I oxidise it along with the sterling silver chain. The surface is then waxed, to enrich and protect it.
With wear, the high points will naturally burnish, revealing the silver.
I have made this necklace 17.5" in length. I like to wear it quite high. The enamelled disc measures approx 60mm diam
